America, Look Up

The importance of America returning to Christian principles and Traditional Family Values

God Spare America

On September 11, 2001, I sat proctoring a test in a local junior high school, when a fellow teacher stepped into the room.  There to relieve me, he said, “Get to a television.”  I hurried down the hallway and stepped into the teacher’s lounge.  An aide stood in front of the television, transfixed.  I peeked over her shoulder in time to see the second plane plow into the World Trade Center.  For the next several minutes, I watched as throngs of people sprinted from the towers.  And then both buildings crumpled, leaving a smoldering pile of rubble.

For the rest of the day, the world’s eyes were glued to the television, attempting to process the information coming in.  By the end of the day, four hijacked planes delivered death and destruction, killing almost 3000 innocent people.  In one coordinated act of cowardice, radical jihadists stole America’s peace of mind and sense of invincibility.  How would America respond?

Later that day, something happened on Capitol Hill no one expected.  After Congressman Hastert addressed the nation, pledging to hold accountable those responsible for terrorism on our shores, the Congress formed an impromptu choir, gathering in a show of solidarity singing “God Bless America.”

Yes….”God Bless America.”

For the next few weeks, churches experienced a major uptick in attendance.  People scrambled to seek answers to combat fears of future attacks.  It’s true…there are no atheists in foxholes.  Sadly, the singing of “God Bless America” and the new interest in clinging to God faded as the United States settled back into the old and familiar routine of life pre-terrorist attack.  When the Congress linked arms and sang a song beseeching the Creator to bless our Country, for a fleeting a moment I wondered,

“Could this be the beginning of a much needed Spiritual Awakening?”

A few short years later, the Democratic National Convention delegates booed when asked to insert the mention of God and Israel into the Democratic Platform.

Yes.  They.  Booed.  God.

Obviously, the memory of terrorists killing a few thousand Americans was dimmed by a new push to eradicate God entirely from the public arena.

Fast forward to 2015.  It appears those opposed to anything holy and righteous have stepped on the accelerator, speeding up America’s trip to “hell in a hand basket.”  In the last few months, the Supreme Court has overstepped its bounds in legalizing gay marriage, Christians face the targeted efforts of homosexuals demanding everyone honor their unions, and a investigative journalist organization has video evidence that Planned Parenthood harvests organs of aborted babies, including those born alive.  A couple of decades ago, America surpassed all other world powers leading as Reagan’s “shining city on a hill.”  Today, it’s a sprint to the bottom to surpass the wickedness of Sodom and Gomorrah.

And now, Rowan County Clerk Kim Davis sits in jail for refusing to issue marriage licenses to same sex couples.  Her professed faith in Christ and belief in the teachings of the Bible dictates her decision.  Obviously, an activist judge wrongly believes the Supreme Court can create laws and finds an opportunity to teach all “bitter clingers” in America a lesson.  It’s becoming apparent the gay agenda isn’t about equality but about forcing everyone to embrace the “alternative” lifestyle.

Unless another horrific calamity strikes America, I don’t anticipate Congress singing “God Bless America” any time soon.  In fact, I’m not even sure we have that right.  We should encourage the President to utilize his “pen and phone” to change the lyrics to “God Spare America.”  That seems more apropos.

Hillary’s Fallacious Attack on Conservatives

Are you prolife?  If so, Hillary Clinton compared you to ISIS.

While stumping in Cleveland, Ohio, Hillary trashed prolife adherents.  She claimed Conservative members of the Republican Party who are determined to defund Planned Parenthood are treating women like terrorist organizations.  In her own words she said,

“Now, extreme views about women, we expect that from some of the terrorist groups, we expect that from people who don’t want to live in the modern world, but it’s a little hard to take from Republicans who want to be the president of the United States.”

Mrs. Clinton shared stories with the crowd intended to draw sympathy for the organization embroiled in controversy because of videos exposing some of the most heinous practices of the abortion giant.  She told of a woman who discovered breast cancer early, because she was able to get a cancer screening.  She championed the stories of teenage girls having access to contraception to prevent unwanted pregnancies.  She discussed the opportunity for women to be screened for sexually transmitted diseases.  Her blather probably convinced some in the crowd that mean old Republicans were reviving their “war on women.”  Hillary’s determined to cast Republicans as the radical Party in need of resurrection from the Middle Ages.  But what political Party really resembles terrorist organizations?

For the past several months, the world has watched in horror as ISIS rampages across the Middle East raping, pillaging, and beheading innocent humans, many of them Christians.  The most horrific images posted online are those with terrorists holding up the heads of victims.  Whereas the Republican Party quickly denounces this atrocious behavior, labeling the perpetrators “radical Islamists,” the Left tiptoes around the truth and claims these heinous crimes don’t represent the “religion of peace.”  Hillary’s Party fails to identify the true terrorists, utilizing the term “terrorists” for those who stand for the most innocent of life.

The most recent video released by the Center for Medical Progress reveals that the best way to ship neural tissue from the abortion clinics to labs across the Country, is to leave the tissue in the baby’s head.  In the video, abortion advocates joked about shipping the entire Calvarium to laboratories with the eyes open.  They chuckled as they imagined the response of a technician tearing into a package to find a baby’s lifeless eyes staring up from the packaging.  Despite these revelations, Hillary Clinton stands unwaveringly with Planned Parenthood and insults Conservative Pro-Life advocates by calling them terrorists.

Mrs. Clinton, obviously you’re confused.  The Democrats most closely resemble ISIS as both support the beheading of innocents.  An old idiom says,

“There’s none so blind as those who will not see.”

And unfortunately, about half of the Country insists on burying its head in the sand.

What Bible Has Jimmy Carter Been Reading?

I’m not sure what Bible Jimmy Carter’s been reading, but concerning gay marriage, the former President said this:

“I believe Jesus would. I don’t have any verse in scripture. … I believe Jesus would approve gay marriage, but that’s just my own personal belief. I think Jesus would encourage any love affair if it was honest and sincere and was not damaging to anyone else, and I don’t see that gay marriage damages anyone else,” he said.

So, would Jesus really support same sex marriage?

First, let me be perfectly clear. God loves gay people. How do I know? Well, John 3:16 states,

“For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life.”

Note, God fails to insert an asterisk or add a disclaimer. No Christian familiar with the teachings of the Bible argues God’s love for all people.

“But God demonstrates His own love for us in this, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.”

But God’s love for people does not change His views on morality.  God’s view of sin doesn’t evolve.

When thinking about how Jesus handled the issue of sin in people’s lives, I often cite the story of the woman caught in adultery. Jesus demonstrates the model of

‘Hate the sin, love the sinner.’

One day as Jesus taught, religious leaders dragged a woman from the bed of an adulterous liaison and dumped her at the Master’s feet. The religious leaders circled, spewing judgment on the woman, reminding Jesus and all within earshot about the Law. For her infidelity, she deserved the prescribed punishment – a public stoning.

In response to their vitriol, Jesus stooped and scrawled something in the dirt, then stood and challenged,

“You who are sinless cast the first stone.”

I’ve often wondered what Jesus wrote. I doubt He wasted His time on doodling stick figures. I wonder if He jotted a list of sins with which these men struggled. Maybe He wrote the words, “pride,” lust,” or the word that labeled the actions of the religious leaders – “entrapment.” (How did these men know about this woman’s indiscretion and the ability to catch her in the arms of a man not her husband?)

As these men cast aspersions at the woman and questioned Jesus’ handling of the situation, I imagine their words trailed off as they watched Jesus write. If Jesus enumerated a list of transgressions, as each man’s besetting sin appeared, the Spirit of God pricked their hearts. When He stood to authorize the first hurled stone, each dropped his rocks, slinking away. Jesus asked,

“Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?

“No one sir,” she replied

“Then neither do I condemn you,” Jesus declared.

Those demanding acceptance of ungodly lifestyles, quote only the first part of Jesus’s statement, adding:

“See Christians, Jesus didn’t condemn and neither should you!”

But what many conveniently ignore is that Jesus added the following exhortation,

“Go and leave your life of sin.”

Jesus would say the same thing to a gay couple seeking Christ’s approval for a same sex marriage today.

Arm chair theologians argue Jesus never addressed same sex marriage, thereby claiming homosexual unions are left up to the discretion of the people choosing them.  Granted, in the Gospels we find no mention of gay unions, but Jesus does address the definition of Biblical marriage.  In Matthew 19:4-6 Jesus says,

“And He answered and said, “Have you not read that He who created them from the beginning MADE THEM MALE AND FEMALE, and said, ‘FOR THIS REASON A MAN SHALL LEAVE HIS FATHER AND MOTHER AND BE JOINED TO HIS WIFE, AND THE TWO SHALL BECOME ONE FLESH ‘?”So they are no longer two, but one flesh. What therefore God has joined together, let no man separate.”…

Jesus doesn’t add,

“Oh and that’s why men marry each other and women marry each other as well.”

That’s not God’s standard for marriage.

Obviously, Jimmy Carter supports the ruling of the Supreme Court and the edict for all states to acknowledge same sex marriage.  Sadly, the Left fails to see this as a governmental overreach and a threat to exercising religious freedom.  And though the highest court in the land has vacated Christian principles, nowhere is it written that a Christian’s morals and conscience are to be abandoned once vacating the shadow of the steeple.  If the Government resorts to stripping Churches of their tax exempt status for failing to recognize same sex marriage, they’re gambling with America’s future…but God’s holding all of the cards.

Jimmy Carter holds the distinction of being a former United States President, but God’s not so impressed that He takes Carter’s view of Scripture into advisement. The Host of Heaven will never hear God say,

“Gabriel, I’ve been wrong about homosexuality…In fact, ‘Modern Family’ and Jimmy Carter changed my view…”

Nor will God’s view evolve on adultery, pre-marital sex, pedophilia, rape, incest, etc.

“Remember those who led you, who spoke the word of God to you; and considering the result of their conduct, imitate their faith. 8 Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.”  Hebrews 13:7-8

Who is Jesus?  According to John chapter one, He is the very “Word” of God.  In other words, the Word of God does not change or evolve to cater to the whims of those looking for a lifestyle to be sanctioned.

Simply put, no Mr. President, Jesus would not approve of same sex marriage.

This Morning I Cried

This morning as I scrolled Facebook, I clicked on a YouTube video, posted by a friend, of the Gaither Vocal Band.  The group delivered a beautiful rendition of the National Anthem.  Their tight harmonies accompanied a moving patriotic video.  As I watched, I swallowed back a lump gathering in my throat.  Then tears welled in my eyes and soon dampened my cheeks.  Yes, I’m an emotional guy, and yes, occasionally a beautifully sung song (or a “Little House” episode) moves me to tears, but neither was the reason this morning.

This morning I cried for America.

I remember the Presidencies of Reagan, Bush I, Clinton, and Bush II. Under these men (even Clinton), I felt more secure in America’s future than I do now.  On 9/11, I watched in horror as planes torpedoed into the World Trade Center, but not once did I doubt America’s ability to rebuild and to stand resolute.  I remember watching proudly as George W. Bush stood on a mound of rubble proclaiming,

I can hear you, the rest of the world can hear you and the people who knocked these buildings down will hear all of us soon.”

Now, our Country’s too busy drawing and re-drawing red lines.  Honestly, I don’t know how this current Administration would respond to another mass attack.  Would they offer the terrorists jobs? Or hugs? Label the event as workplace violence? Or would they hold a press conference to warn Americans to refrain from calling this Islamic terrorism?  Granted, this is sarcastic in nature, but how many of us really trust the current leadership in Washington to do what’s best for America?

American Enterprise Institute published a public opinion report evaluating Americans’ level of patriotism. One of the most astounding and disappointing results was the following:

Americans aren’t as proud of their country as some citizens in other countries are of their own nations. According to a World Values Survey, 98 percent of citizens in Qatar claimed to be “very proud” of their nationality. However, only 56 percent of Americans responded positively in this category.

Qatar?  Are you kidding me?  In Qatar, only Muslims can express their religion publicly, all others must conduct worship services in private homes.  Those leaving the Muslim faith face imprisonment or death.  And yet, 98% of those living in Qatar are proud of their country….How can this be?

Everyday we read of new crippling policies, court judgments, or another round of decisions being written into law by an overreaching “pen and phone.”  The Church sits on the precipice of being made obsolete as the government now attempts to shoulder the responsibility of dictating what is and isn’t sinful.  And now innoucuous entertainment is banned because of a flag that Liberals find offensive.  Many Conservative people are cowering in the shadows, fearful of offending the PC police or being investigated by rogue government agencies.  I wish the above was hyperbole, but that’s the America we currently reside in.

That’s why I cried.

I’m not weeping for myself, but for my family, especially my kids. Unless America rights this ship and charts a new course, what will our future generations face? If we’re not careful, in a few decades, America will be nothing more than a footnote in the pages of history. The Founding Fathers sacrificed too much for this to be our Country’s outcome. Too many brave men and women have paid the ultimate price on the world’s battlefields for us to surrender our freedoms to ideologies intent on destroying American exceptionalism.

At times I feel like Elijah.  After a God-given victory against the prophets of Baal, he fled from another enemy…the Queen.  He moaned that no one else was standing for God.  He thought himself to be all alone.  He suffered from a

“nobody likes me, everybody hates me, I’m just going to go eat worms”

mentality.  God reminded Elijah that there were 7,000 others who had yet to bow their knees to false gods.  Occasionally, the filthy haze of America’s ills conceals the possibility of the United States rising from the ashes to greatness again.  That’s not an impossibility. But for that to happen, America must turn wholeheartedly to God and remember the encouraging words of President Ronald Reagan,

“We are never defeated unless we give up on God.”

Keep standing Patriots, and may God once again bless the United States of America.

Saving America…and the General Lee

As a child, I looked forward to Friday night television. Every Friday evening, my family gathered around the television, anxiously awaiting the antics of the boys from Hazzard County.  I often imagined myself sitting at the wheel of the car that could fly.  We watched so regularly my siblings and I could sing the theme song, and I developed a decent impersonation of Roscoe P. Coltrane.  Yes, the “Dukes of Hazzard” conjures pleasant memories of my childhood.  I’ll have to admit, I haven’t given the show much thought since the Duke Boys drove the General Lee off into the sunset in 1985.  Although a few months ago, I scanned Netflix offerings to see if I could introduce my kids to the Duke Boys and the General Lee.  To no avail, I assumed the show would make its appearance one of these days.

That might not be the case.

After Dylan Roof murdered nine people in an historic black church in Charleston, investigators discovered pictures of Roof carrying the Confederate Flag.  Immediately, adherents of political correctness demanded the flag be banned from the Capitol Lawn in South Carolina.

Many jumped on the banning bandwagon.  The National Park Service confirms Confederate Flags were removed at Fort Sumter, the site of the first Civil War Battle, and Confederate Flag souvenirs were stripped from the gift shop shelves.  Some have called for banning the book “Gone with the Wind.”  The latest victim of political correctness is the beloved TV classic, “The Dukes of Hazzard.”  Because of the Confederate Flag flap, TV Land announced it would no longer air the show because the General Lee sports a Confederate Flag on its roof.  PGA Golfer Bubba Watson, an owner of one of the original General Lee’s, announced today that he plans to paint over the Confederate Flag, replacing it with an American Flag.  Mr. Watson announced earlier on Twitter,

“All men ARE created equal, I believe that so I will be painting the American flag over the roof of the General Lee #USA

Many believe this is a necessary step forward in eradicating racism in the United States of America.  Instead, this is political correctness run amok. Not once while watching The Dukes of Hazzard did I harbor hatred of minorities.  After watching the show for six seasons, I didn’t join the Ku Klux Clan. The Duke’s never wore white hoods and burned crosses. The only reason the Confederate Flag adorned the car was to celebrate Southern pride.  Something the show expressed with…well…pride.

If the Left seriously desires to rid racism, they should start with their darling, Planned Parenthood.  Margaret Sanger founded America’s largest abortion provider for the express purpose of eradicating

“human weeds.”

Who were these undesirables as described by Sanger?  Black people, immigrants, and poor people.  As Sanger wrote in her autobiography, she founded Planned Parenthood in 1916

“to stop the multiplication of the unfit.”

Now that’s racism, but the Left adores the abortion industry and supports its mission.

“Just two good ol’ boys
never meanin’ no harm..”

Those phrases begin the theme song to the beloved show.  I wish the Left adopted the portion “never meanin’ no harm.”  But instead, they continue to stomp on the Constitution and create an America barely recognizable by a boy who dreamed of one day driving the General Lee.

Though our Country’s being run by people determined to implement a socialist’s “hope and change,” there’s still hope.  Real hope.  God’s still on the throne and the 2016 election is just around the corner.  And for that I can give a hearty,

And making a Conservative choice is a baby step in saving America….and the General Lee.

Truth Telling is a Revolutionary Act

My parents taught me to tell the truth.  Lying resulted in painful consequences.  So, I learned early in life to avoid falsehoods and be a person of my word.  Just a few decades ago, telling the truth earned one the title of “trustworthy” or a “person of integrity.”  Just a few decades ago, people appreciated the truth and those who told it.  Nowadays, distinguishing the truth from lies in the world of public service can be a burdensome chore, especially when news outlets are no longer reporters but water carriers for the Administration occupying the White House.  How do we peasants discover the truth?

I believe the answer is a spiritual one.

Sure, a handful in media do their best to uncover fact from fiction, but sometimes the truth’s so far buried, removing layer after layer of falsehood can exhaust and frustrate the most determined of reporters.  Over the last several years it’s been a practice of most of the mainstream media to swallow the lines and rehearsed responses delivered from the Obama Administration, and only the bravest of souls dare challenge or pose probing queries.  White House Director Anita Dunn told an overseas crowd in 2009 concerning Obama’s Presidential Campaign,

“Very rarely did we communicate through the press anything that we didn’t absolutely control.”

So much for living up to the promise of being the most “transparent Administration in history.”

So what about the spiritual solution?

Though seldom talked about in the Nation’s Beltway, a spiritual battle is raging for the heart of this Country. In Ephesians 6, the Apostle Paul reminds,

“For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.”

In our efforts to pinpoint our government’s problems, we identify those we consider to be the top perpetrators. The names of Obama, Jarrett, Holder, Pelosi, Reid, and Boehner (Yes, even a Republican) top the list of most aggregious perpetrators of America’s ills.  But in reality, these people aren’t the faces of the real problem.  Remember,

“We wrestle not against flesh and blood…”

In the Book of Proverbs, Solomon shares seven things God considers abominations. “Lying lips” makes the list. The Bible teaches Satan is the father of lies.  At no time are people more like the devil than when fabricating stories and weaving tales of deception. Unfortunately, people seldom admit to lying, but instead use terms like “misremembered” or “misspoke” to describe their “regrettable” actions.  Actually, the only “regret” is getting caught.  And, there’s the solution. Illuminating the darkness.

John 1:5 says,

“The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overvome it.”

As Christians, we must start the battle for our Country on our knees.  For too long we’ve moaned and groaned about our Country’s course but done little else.  If we truly want to turn the juggernaut of overreaching government around, we must follow the recipe as outlined in II Chronicles 7:14:

“If My people, who are called by My Name, will humble themselves and pray, and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from Heaven, will forgive their sins, and heal their land.”

First, Christians need to resolve to get right with God.  Asking God to illuminate the areas in our life that offend His holiness.  When Christians enmasse commit their hearts to God, then healing to the land becomes a reality.

“The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.”

Those conniving and plotting in the darkness will have their evil deeds fully exposed. Until revival breaks out, we need to ask God to thwart the efforts of those weakening and undermining the foundations of this great Country. We need to ask God to bring to light the truth, and raise leaders in all walks of life to proclaim it. This won’t be popular. George Orwell once said,

“In a time of deceit telling the truth is a revolutionary act.”

The answer to America’s shortcomings is spiritual.  America’s problems won’t be solved at the voting booth but at the altar.

God Refuses to Bless Abortion

The prophet Isaiah warned,

“Woe to those who call evil good and good evil, who put darkness for light and light for darkness, who put bitter for sweet and sweet for bitter.”

This cautioning from the Word of God applies today as well.

A friend shared a Facebook page of an organization called, “Religious Coalition for Reproductive Choice.” On this page, a lady proudly holds a message that reads,

“I’m a lifelong United Methodist and I thank God for abortion providers.”

I thank God for abortion providers? Are you kidding me?

I chose to dig a little deeper.  I searched Facebook for “Religious Coalition for Reproductive Choice,” and several options from various states appeared.  I chose “Ohio Religious Coalition for Reproductive Choice.”  Scrolling the site, I noted several people holding similar “I thank God” signs, each representing either a religious affiliation or claiming to be a Christian.  You’ll also find a daily prayer guide. For instance, Day 14 reads,

“Today we pray for Christians everywhere to embrace the loving model of Jesus in the way that he refused to shame women.”

Then, in fine print at the bottom,

“40 days of prayer to keep abortion safe and legal.”

The Bible clearly teaches this important truth about prayer.

“If I had cherished sin in my heart, the Lord would not have listened;” Psalm 66:18

Praying for God to bless abortion is like asking God to bless adultery, or stealing, or murder….and in this case, especially murder, for that’s what abortion is.

I can say with complete confidence that if people really do pray to keep abortion legal, that prayer’s falling on deaf ears. In Psalm 139, God reveals we are “fearfully and wonderfully made,” and that He “knits us together in our mother’s womb.” Augustine observed,

“Men go abroad to wonder at the heights of mountains, at the huge waves of the sea, at the long courses of the rivers, at the vast compass of the ocean, at the circular motions of the stars; and they pass by themselves without wondering”

Consider the following facts about the human body:

“You have more than 200 bones each shaped for its function, connected intricately to one another through lubricated joints that cannot be perfectly duplicated by modern science. More than 500 muscles connect to these bones. Some obey willful commands; others perform their duty in response to unconscious commands from the brain. They all work together to keep us alive. The heart muscle itself beats over 103,000 times each day, pumping your blood cells a distance of 168 million miles.

Your lungs automatically breathe in the right amount of life-giving oxygen which just happens to be mixed in the right proportions (about 20% oxygen, 80% nitrogen) in our atmosphere. Each of the other vital organs and glands in your body works in complex conjunction with the others to sustain life, which science can’t explain or create.

A single human chromosome contains 20 billion bits of information. How much is that? What would be its equivalent, if it were written down in an ordinary printed book in modern human language? Twenty billion bits are the equivalent of about 3 billion letters. If there are approximately six letters in an average word, the information content of a human chromosome corresponds to about 500 million words. If there are about 300 words on an ordinary page of printed type, this corresponds to about two million pages…..” (Facts from Sermon: No Escape from God, by Steven J. Cole)

In other words we are God’s masterpiece.

A few months ago, news agencies expressed outrage over ISIS and its decision to smash valuable artifacts in the Mosul Museum in Iraq. Some of these ancient pieces dated back 3000 years. According to the Christian Science Monitor,

“The tactic is unofficially called “cultural genocide,” a term that David Nersessian, assistant dean of global programs at Boston University School of Management, has used to describe attacks on an ethnic or religious group’s wider institutions – including its languages, traditional practices and ways, religious institutions and objects, and clergy members, academics, and intellectuals.”

This destruction of priceless artifacts and relics is truly a shame, but what about God’s masterpiece?

The Psalmist utilizes the term “knitted together,” as the act in which God performs the miracle of creating life.  Imagine for a moment that your grandmother spent countless hours on a handmade quilt, customizing the design and color to your own personal tastes.  At Christmas, she presents the heirloom to you.  Though not priceless in the eyes of the world, it will be something you treasure because of the one behind the design.  To rip it to shreds and toss it in the trash would be a sacrilege, a shame, and a slap to your grandmother’s face and legacy.

God is behind the design of life. Tossing unwanted babies in to trash bins slaps the Creator’s face and breaks His heart.  The “god” of the Religious Coalition….is not the God of the Bible, but resembles more the pagan god Molech.  People worshipped Molech by sacrificing their children in the fire.  Today, the abortion industry honors a false pagan god every time a surgeon rips a child from the womb.

“Woe to those who call evil good and good evil,”

For those praying for God to bless abortion, you can save your breath. It ain’t happenin’.

Maybe America Isn’t a Christian Nation

I often hear people argue America wasn’t founded on Christian principles and therefore Obama’s quote, “We (America) do not consider ourselves a Christian nation,” resonates with truth. For those who ascribe to this idea, they dig through the writings and quotations of the Founding Fathers to justify this belief. One such tidbit comes from the writings of our second President in a letter written to Thomas Jefferson. John Adams is often quoted as saying,

This would be the best of all possible worlds, if there were no religion in it!”

I thumbed through my “God and Country” book of quotes and found that John Adams also said,

“Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other.”

So which is it? What did he really believe?

Based upon biographical works of Adams, I chose to believe the former quote to be taken out of context. I researched the “no religion” quote and found that history revisionists extracted the quote from a greater body of work. In fact, here’s the complete quotation in an April 19, 1817, letter to Thomas Jefferson.

“The general principles on which the fathers achieved independence were. . . . the general principles of Christianity. . . . I will avow that I then believed, and now believe, that those general principles of Christianity are as eternal and immutable as the existence and attributes of God; and that those principles of liberty are as unalterable as human nature.

“Twenty times in the course of my late reading have I been on the point of breaking out, “This would be the best of all possible worlds, if there were no religion at all!!!” But in this exclamation I would have been as fanatical as Bryant or Cleverly. Without religion, this world would be something not fit to be mentioned in polite company, I mean hell.”

Watching the happenings in the world today, it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to deduce our world’s going “to hell in a handbasket.” At the 2012 Democratic National Convention, participants enthusiastically booed the idea of recognizing God and the nation of Israel in the Democratic platform. When a nation chooses to shun God and His chosen people, judgment can’t be far behind.

Sadly, we’ve adopted the ideology of those referenced in Judges 21:25,

“In those days Israel had no king; everyone did as they saw fit.”

I almost gag each time I hear Obama conclude a speech with,

“And God bless the United States of America.”

Will God bless a nation that continues to abort babies by the millions and champions gay marriage? It appears we’re living in an age where people identify evil as good and good as evil. The prophet Isaiah warned against such behavior,

“Woe to those who call evil good and good evil, who put darkness for light and light for darkness, who put bitter for sweet and sweet for bitter.” (Isaiah 5:20.)

In the New King James Version of the Bible, “woe” occurs 71 times in 69 verses in the Old Testament, most of them in the prophets. The New Testament chimes in with the word 40 times in 33 verses, and in 32 of those 40 times it comes from the mouth of Jesus! The word “woe” was used to express grief and lamentation and was associated with the grief of death. God used the word “woe” to warn of pending judgment.

Several times throughout the Scriptures the word “woe” also means the opposite of “giddy-up.” In other words, “halt, stop, or cease.” I can imagine the prophet Isaiah bellowing out God’s message of “woe” to America today. Imagine him preaching, exhorting Americans to,

“Stop your disobedience to the Word of God….halt your transgressions….cease your godless behavior….Repent!!!”

After spending time observing the abominations being committed by the masses today, he might side with Barack Obama.

Maybe this Country isn’t a Christian nation.

Why Jobs Won’t Rehabilitate ISIS

The Islamic State continues to dominate headlines.  The atrocities of beheadings and burning caged people strike terror in the hearts of those sitting in the bulls-eye of the ISIS campaign.  According to those well versed in the religion of Islam, this behavior stems from a belief that the end of the world is imminent, and to hasten the arrival of the Islamic Messiah, they must destroy Israel and the United States.  When the Obama Administration insists these barbaric acts are perpetrated by those embracing a twisted interpretation of the Koran, they’re spewing half-truths and lies to protect the “religion of peace.”

For starters, the name “Islam” means to submit, not peace.  It means to completely surrender and cease resistance against a stronger power. Some suggest this higher power is Allah; but those left in the wake of terrorism see the term as submission to the precepts and teachings of Islam…or else.   Countries with strong democracies stir the furor of those wishing to usher in the arrival of the “Twelfth Imam” or the “Mahdi.”  Israel and the United States sits squarely in the sights of the violent Islamists as these bastions of freedom fail to recognize Sharia as the law of the land.  Because of the despised freedoms allowed in these countries, radicals dub Israel the “Little Satan” and the United States the “Great Satan.”  With a belief system so steeped in the destruction of democracies and republics, no wonder they strive to bring Jihad to the shores of liberty.

In January of 2013, the Senate Foreign Relations Committee grilled then Secretary of State about the Benghazi terrorist attack.  In a particularly heated exchange, Clinton said,

” Was it (the attack) because of a protest or was it because of guys out for a walk one night who decided that they’d they go kill some Americans? What difference at this point does it make?”

What difference does it make?  WHAT DIFFERENCE DOES IT MAKE?  With all due respect Madame Secretary, it makes a world of difference.

If America propagates the idea these men are nothing more than blood thirsty bored adventure seekers, then some might be persuaded to believe this “fad” of murdering innocents will soon pass and occupy nothing more than a footnote in future textbooks.  But for those who haven’t fallen under the spell of revisionist history or Liberal doublespeak, watching the broadcasts of raging antics mirrors 1400 years of Islamic terror.

Some in Washington D.C. actually believe providing jobs for the radicals is one way of curbing their desire for seventy-two virgins.  Maybe they’re right.  Imagine gifting each terrorist a street vendor cart, an unoccupied corner, and an inventory of burkas and camel saddles.  That might solve the problem of ISIS once and for all.

But probably not.
