Do You Really Care About Our Kids?

God has blessed my family with six children, three boys…three girls….a modern day Brady Boggs8Bunch of sorts.  When our family piles out of the Suburban or walks into the grocery store, our presence raises eyebrows.  I wish I had a nickel for every time a person asks, “You know how that happens, right?” My favorite response is, “My wife knows, but she won’t tell me.”  Truth be told, we love kids.  It’s that plain and simple.

We (our family) associate or tend to support a political Party that champions children, starting at conception.  We proudly claim to be the Party of Life.  And that’s the case for the GOP unless the preferred Candidate fails to receive the Party’s nod for nominee and then some moan and groan, threatening to support a third Party candidate or refusing to vote in November.  But my third Party candidate is pro-life, you say.  That’s great, but in our overwhelmingly entrenched two-party system, a third party candidate only serves to steal votes away from either the Democrat or Republican nominee.  In this case, Donald Trump stands to lose the most from individuals dead set against the GOP nominee.

Am I one hundred percent convinced Trump’s a true Conservative?  Absolutely not!  He concerns me…a great deal.  However, am I convinced Hillary Clinton plans to perpetuate Obama’s legacy by sticking America with a third term of Obama’s ideologies?  Absolutely!  She’s promised as much.  And this is one of the only things she’s said that can be trusted.

Time and time again I converse with Conservatives who won’t vote for Trump because their conscience won’t allow it.  Well, if that’s you, I pose the following questions:

Will your conscience allow Hillary Clinton to nominate four or more Supreme Court Justices?

Will your conscience vote for Hillary, a woman worshiped by the nation’s largest abortion provider?

Will your conscience vote for Hillary even after she claimed Margaret Sanger as a hero?

Will your conscience vote for a woman who lied about Benghazi, blaming the attack on a YouTube video?

Will your conscience vote for a woman who compromised national security by unilaterally deciding to utilize her own private server and email?

Will your conscience vote for a woman whose husband sexually harassed and assaulted scores of women?  (Hillary called the women’s charges, “Bimbo eruptions.)

Will your conscience vote for a woman who’s been called “extremely careless” by the FBI?

And let me ask again, will your conscience permit you to allow Hillary Clinton to nominate four or more Supreme Court Justices, who enjoy lifetime appointments?

A vote for a Third Party candidate or boycotting the ballot box in November is a vote for Hillary…a violation of the conscience many claim the desire to protect.

Trump’s not perfect…not even close.  And we really don’t know how America will fare under a Trump/Pence Administration.  Clinton’s track record speaks for itself; Hillary’s term in office might be America’s death knell.

So I ask, do you really care about our kids?

God’s Not In Panic Mode

In John 6, we find one account of the feeding of the five thousand. The people flocked to Jesus for various reasons, His teaching, preaching, and healing amassed multitudes wherever His Father led. On this occasion, the day grew long, and the remote location offered no resources to feed the hungry people before sending them home. John 6: 5 and following shares:

Then Jesus lifted up His eyes, and seeing a great multitude coming toward Him, He said to Philip, “Where shall we buy bread, that these may eat?” But this He said to test him, for He Himself knew what He would do.

The key insight to hone in on is that Jesus had already formulated a plan to meet the needs of the people.

As we race toward the Convention and the Presidential election in November, it appears panic has settled over true Conservatives in the Republican Party. Every day Never Trumps and Trump supporters fire salvos at each other, neither budging or giving ground. I’ll admit a wave of panic washed over me when Cruz suspended his campaign. With concern for the future of Conservatism, I noted Low Information Voters existed in BOTH parties. And yes, that aggravates me. And I’m especially disappointed in Evangelicals who chose to support Trump over a true Conservative like Ted Cruz. That being said, I won’t spend the next few months, worrying about a Clinton or Trump Administration. Fretting and hand wringing won’t change the course of Providence…note the capital “P.”

It is God who sets up kings and deposes them. Daniel 2:21 shares:

“He changes times and seasons; He removes kings and sets up kings; He gives wisdom to the wise and knowledge to those who have understanding.”

Daniel 4:17 reiterates the truth:

“The sentence is by the decree of the watchers, the decision by the word of the holy ones, to the end that the living may know that the Most High rules the kingdom of men and gives it to whom He will and sets over it the lowliest of men.”

A clear understanding of these truths show that politics is merely a method God uses to accomplish His will. Even though less than savory politicians abuse their political muscle, meaning it for evil, God uses it for good. Concerning our Country’s return to biblical principles, we mustn’t believe political entities are wielding the keys to Revival. If a spiritual awakening ignites in America, it will happen when the Church in lockstep marches into the world shining the Light of Christ.

Does this mean Christians should stay home on election day? Absolutely not! Where we have a voice and can elect our leaders, we should exercise that right by voting for those whose views most closely parallel our own.

Might we be disappointed in November’s outcome? Sure.  But it’s quite possible, even likely, that America’s suffered under the Obama Administration because our Country’s acting like a petulant child.  The Bible states,

“God disciplines those He loves.”

Raising strong-willed children often requires a lesson be taught multiple times.  Over the past few years, we’ve witnessed America rush to “hell in a handbasket.”  Should we really expect Him to give the Country a godly principled leader when we’ve thumbed our noses at Him?  II Peter 3:3 says,

“…scoffers will come in the last days with scoffing, following their own sinful desires.”

Isn’t that a perfect synopsis of the world today?

Maybe, just maybe, we’re seeing a rapid decline in morality because Gabriel’s holding the trumpet to his lips.  Maybe, just maybe, God’s about ready to send Jesus back for His Bride.  No matter the reason for our societal plunge into a cesspool, God’s not in panic mode and He has in mind what He’s going to do.

Unlike a politician’s pledge, we can take God’s promises to the bank.

An Open Letter to Donald Trump

Dear Mr. Trump,

Congratulations on all but clinching the Republican nomination.  Unless you fall short of 1237 delegates needed before the Convention, and a new candidate rises from the ashes, you will be representing the Republican Party in November.  Since Ted Cruz emerged on the political scene a few years ago, I have been his fan, and supported his Presidential bid.  You must know I represent millions of Conservatives, disappointed at the outcome of this Primary and Caucus season.  I find it incredibly difficult to comprehend why “Conservatives” and “Evangelicals” chose to support your bid to be President of the United States.  That being said, I intend to support the Republican nominee, even if it’s you, in order to help defeat the Clinton Machine.  I would, however, like you to consider the following observations.

First, you claim to be a Christian, yet you boast of infidelity, slander opponents, and use profanity proficiently.  These behaviors alone create doubt that your stated “faith” is nothing more than a ploy to entice evangelicals to support you.  No, we’re not electing a National Pastor, but America needs a principled leader.  One whose word we can trust.

Second, for the last 7 years we’ve suffered greatly under miserable and dangerous leadership.  His distaste for American exceptionalism oozes from every speech, and any dissension draws harsh and painful consequences.  He especially hates a press that won’t get in line and carry his water.  Sound familiar?  Many Conservatives hoped to elect a President not only familiar with the Constitution but faithful to honor its implementation.  Please don’t model the behavior of Obama.  Restore dignity to the White House.  And by the way, graciousness and humility go a long way…..

Third, you waved a Bible while delivering a speech at Liberty University.  For the first time in my life, I witnessed a man raising the Word of God over his head, while cursing from the lecturn.  That Book you were waving….your Grandmother’s Bible…holds the key to wise leadership.  It instructs on how to relate to your fellow man.  Most importantly, the Bible explains how one can be guaranteed eternal life.  Mr. Trump, being a successful businessman and entrepreneur means nothing if you don’t have a personal relationship with God.  Recently, I heard one say the Bible is God’s cheat codes for life, but more than that it has given wisdom, insight, and comfort to some of America’s finest leaders.

“It is impossible to rightly govern a nation without God and the Bible.” George Washington

“I believe the Bible is the best gift God has ever given to man.  All the good of the Savior of the world is communicated to us through the Book.” Abraham Lincoln

“Within the covers of the Bible are the answers for all the problems men face.” Ronald Reagan

Many #NeverTrump people pledge to stay home or write in a third party candidate.  The odds of you defeating Hillary Clinton without their support is nil.  For you to possibly sway some to your side, there must be a stark change in both your attitudes and actions.  You have fences to mend and walls to tear down.  I pledge to pray for you daily and I’m challenging the rest of the Country to do the same.  But most importantly, Mr. Trump, I challenge you to read Proverbs 3:5-6 and apply these Scriptures to your life.

America’s thirsty for a leader in whom we can be proud.

Will you be that man?

Sincerely,

An American Pastor

To My Fellow Cruz Supporters

To my fellow Cruz supporters:  Last night proved Low Information Voters exist in both Parties.   I was in a meeting when my wife texted, “Cruz is out.”  I felt sucker punched…physically ill…fighting mad, but too exhausted to throw a punch…so yes, I share your pain.  However, I refuse to write in a third party candidate that can’t possibly win; nor will I stay home and sulk on Election Day.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not jumping on the Trump Train with enthusiasm and chest bumps.  Any of the Republican potentials would’ve been better than Trump…well, except for Kasich.  So, with my nose held tightly between thumb and index finger, I will cast a vote for Donald Trump in November.  Am I happy about it? No!  Do I think he’s a true Conservative?  Absolutely not!  He’s a Rhino at best and at worst, a Democrat Light.  However, there might be a smidgen of integrity left in Trump, whereas Hillary Clinton has obviously made some type of nefarious deal with the devil, or she’s competing with Lucifer for the title of the universe’s biggest liar.

Why do I believe Trump MIGHT be a bit better than Hillary?  Four reasons.  First, she boasts proudly of her support for abortion at any stage in pregnancy.  Though Trump’s past suggests otherwise, he says he’s pro-life.  Second, Hillary pledges to carry on the legacy of Obama, administering a third Obama term.  Trump says Obama’s been a disaster.  Does Donald actually mean this?  I’m not sure.  But we know for certain the anti-American intent of Hillary Clinton. Third, Hillary pledges to enact stricter gun control laws.  Daughter Chelsea says Mama Clinton would like nothing more than to repeal the 2nd Amendment. Trump insists he’s a strong supporter of the 2nd Amendment and the NRA.  According to a Breitbart article from last year,

“GOP presidential hopeful Donald Trump is a lifetime member of the NRA and a concealed carry permit holder who believes the advantages an armed citizenry provides to America are so evident as to be beyond “debate.””

And lastly, there’s the issue of the Supreme Court.  In fact, that may now be the most pressing reason to vote for a “Republican.”  Whether or not Trump intends to nominate a Conservative in gavelthe vein of the late Justice Scalia is yet to be seen.  However, we know Hillary Clinton’s nominee/nominees will be Left of Elizabeth Warren.  If Conservatives lose the Supreme Court, America’s done…this isn’t hyperbole.  We’re finished.  To reverse course and restore American exceptionalism would take decades…if ever accomplished at all.  If we elect another candidate hell-bent on cramming socialism down America’s throat, we might as well rename ourselves Northern Venezuela.

Might Trump be a nightmare?  Absolutely!  But a nightmare greater than the Clinton’s occupying the White House?  Hardly.

Some will now attack me and claim I’ve never been a true Conservative.  That’s hogwash.  Some will say I’m abandoning my principles.  And once again, that’s not true.  Understand I’ve been blessed with a wife and six precious children.  I’m thinking about their long term future…futures impacted by lifetime appointments and judicial activism.  I’m not focusing on my present frustration with the current state of events.

Just sharing my heart.

Blaming God for America’s Woes

Whenever life fails to go as planned, we tend to blame God.  Sure, God controls the universe, holding it firmly in the palm of His Hand, but this does not mean we are exempt from experiencing painful consequences of poor choices.  From the very beginning, there’s been a problem with taking responsibility.  In the Garden of Eden, Adam threw God and Eve under the bus for his part in biting into the forbidden fruit.  In the Book of Jonah, we find the prophet blaming God for allowing him to soak in the digestive juices of a “great fish.”

Do you recall the story?  God called Jonah to go to Nineveh to warn them of pending Judgment.  Instead of being obedient, Jonah boarded a ship to Tarshish, a port city almost 900 miles in the opposite direction.  He balked at sharing a message with people he believed deserving of God’s wrath.  While on this ship, God orchestrated a violent storm at sea.  The sailors discovered Jonah was the cause of this tempest, and Jonah explained the only way to save the ship was to throw him overboard.  And that’s what they did. But listen to what Jonah says in chapter 2:3,

“For You cast me into the deep…”

Jonah obviously forgets his role in the story.  Jonah ran from God.  God chose to get his attention.  Jonah asked to be thrown into the sea.  Blaming God for becoming fish food serves to exempt Jonah from responsibility.

In several conversations of late, many people ask why Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton stand atop the race for the White House.  Those opposing Trump cite his conceit, vulgarity, and boyish bully-ness.  On the other side of the aisle, Clinton turns the stomach of many because of her propensity to lie and her role in an Ambassador’s death in Benghazi….not to mention she’s under FBI investigation concerning her handling (or mishandling) of classified and top secret emails.  Why do voters choose people like that? I’m asked.

It’s simple. We asked for it.

Remember how the Children of Israel suffered from the “Keeping up with the Joneses” syndrome?  Other nations appointed kings, and Israel determined to have one as well.  The prophet Samuel warned them of the consequences of having King, but they disregarded the prophet’s vetting of a future leader.  Samuel was offended and went to the Lord, who said,

“They have not rejected you.  They have rejected me from being their king” (I Samuel 8:7)

Once again Samuel implored the people to reconsider; instead they demanded a king.  So finally God said,

“Give them a king” (I Kings 8:22)

God allowed the Children of Israel to have a king, not because their choice was in His perfect will, but because of His practice of allowing people to exercise free will.

Fast forward to 2016.

The current frontrunners in both parties aren’t the problem; they reflect the result of a society stomping on the accelerator, running the opposite direction of God.  Trump claims repentance isn’t necessary in his life, and Hillary had the audacity to say she’s never lied to the American people.  But why does this behavior shock us?  In 2012, the Democratic Party booed God at their national convention, and sadly, the Republican Party may not be that far behind.  For whatever reason, we’ve lost sight of the importance of character, values, and morality, pillars modeled by our Founders as they crafted the Constitution and cited the Hand of Providence as their guide.  Our moral compass has broken and we’re shaking the magic eight ball to get directions.  We’ve lost sight of what’s true and right and pure and noble…. As a Country, we’re getting what we asked for.  Why don’t we care otherwise?

Maybe it’s because we’re too busy Keeping up with the Kardashians.

Why Not Respectability?

A few days ago, my 11 year old posed the following question:  Dad, who have been your favorite Presidents. I thought a moment and responded, “Lincoln, Reagan, Washington, not necessarily in that order.” He followed up with another question: Why? Several thoughts came to mind, but I limited my answer to two reasons. They were respectable men, acknowledging the importance of God to help direct the course of a Nation.  My son considered my response then asked the $64,000 question.  If those traits are important, then why are people so excited about Trump?

I’ve tuned into each Republican Debate, watching with great interest the back and forth between the frontrunner, Trump, and the other Candidates contending for the Republican nomination.  My two oldest occasionally sit and watch the drama unfold.  Both question the facial expressions and mannerisms of Trump, his disrespect for his opponents and anyone who questions his ideology or his ability to lead.  The last debate stooped to a new low as Trump and Rubio sparred over his hand size and how that directly correlates to another physical attribute.  Maybe I’m too young to remember, but did any of this crude diatribe occur between Reagan and Carter.  I don’t even think Bill Clinton stooped this low…well, at least on the debate stage.

Sadly, our culture has devolved into a society of celebrity worship.  For whatever reason, we tend to accept the mudslinging, the profane, and the over-the-top antics of celebrities, explaining away the behavior as “that’s just Hollywood.”  Can anyone imagine Donald Trump leading the pack had he not hosted a successful reality show for years?

Are any of the candidates perfect?  Of course not, but at least some act with Presidential decorum.  Imagine for a moment Trump hosting a press conference with Putin in the Rose Garden.  Putin expresses a dissenting view of President Trump’s ideology and “the Donald” shrugs, makes faces, snorts, and calls him “Little Putin?”  Is he truly the man we want representing the United States of America?

American made history when electing Obama, the first bi-racial individual to hold the highest office in the land.  Many people voted for Obama, not because of his policies or his experience, but because he was a “rock star” in the Democrat party, a celebrity of sorts, and they wanted to help America do something that had never been done before.  (Why they re-elected him, I’ll never know….)Voting for Trump because he starred on the Apprentice, makes as much sense as voting for a Candidate that’s under FBI investigation.

And maybe the single most important reason for not supporting Trump is his answer on repentance.  When asked if he’d ever confessed his sin, he said no and suggested it was better to keep God out of his mistakes.  A man who thinks God isn’t necessary for forgiveness is a man determined to govern a Country without the leading Hand of Providence.  Can America survive another four to eight years of a Narcissist and Chief in the Oval Office?  Only by the grace of God…..

Oh, and by the way….if you believe Mexico’s going to pay for the wall, I’ve got some prime ocean front property for sale….in Arizona.

Is Donald Trump an Evangelical Christian?

Currently, it appears the possibility of derailing the Trump Train is slim to none. Though Ted Cruz is waging a valiant effort, his polling numbers fall short of overtaking the brash Republican frontrunner. The most surprising aspect of Trump’s meteoric rise is his popularity among evangelical Christians.  Almost a third of people claiming to be born again have tossed their support behind a candidate whose faith journey is questionable at best.

Trump’s flirtation with personal scandals and profiting from seedy businesses are well documented. Trump has raked in money off of strip clubs, cheated on his wives, and appeared on the 1990 cover of Playboy magazine.  In his book “Art of the Deal,” he boasts about bedding other men’s wives. He wrote,

“If I told the real stories of my experiences with women, often seemingly very happy and married and important women, this book would be a guaranteed best seller.”

The biggest head scratcher of all is the Trump endorsement by Liberty University President, Jerry Falwell, Jr.  Liberty is arguably the most conservative institution of higher learning in America, and when news outlets broadcast Falwell’s coveted backing, other Christian leaders expressed their concern. One of those was Southern Baptist Convention President, Russell Moore.  Moore reminded Falwell, Jr. of the 1998 “Resolution on Moral Character of Public Officials” as passed by the Southern Baptist Convention. The resolution reads,

“[We] urge all Americans to embrace and act on the conviction that character does count in public office, and to elect those officials and candidates who, although imperfect, demonstrate consistent honesty, moral purity and the highest character.”

In the book of I Samuel we find the verse,

“Man sees the outward appearance, God sees the heart.”

In other words, no one has the right to make a final determination on Mr. Trump’s Christianity. However, one statement of Trump’s is quite disconcerting for those who truly are “born again.” In an interview with CNN’s Anderson Cooper, Trump said,

“Why do I have to repent or ask for forgiveness, if I am not making mistakes? I work hard, I’m an honorable person.”

Honorable? Really?

Concerning Trump’s past money making ventures off of the exploitation of women and infidelities, Collin Hanna, president of Let Freedom Ring USA, said the following,

“It gets at the very matter of character, of sin, of forgiveness. A mature conservative Evangelical Christian should not hold sin against someone, but unconfessed sin should be a problem, a theological problem. And unadmitted sin is sort of a step beyond unconfessed sin, isn’t it?”

Trump’s boasts about cheating on his wife and sleeping with the wives of powerful men is far from a contrite heart.

Far be it from me or any other Christian to pass final judgment on Donald Trump. That role is reserved for God and God alone. However, the Bible states,

“…by their fruits you will know them.”

His checkered past fails to model the life of a follower of Christ, and Trump admits leaving God out of the equation when he makes a mistake. Trump had this to say when questioned about repenting of sin:

“I am not sure I have (asked God for forgiveness). I just go on and try to do a better job from there. I think if I do something wrong, I think, I just try and make it right. I don’t bring God into that picture. I don’t.”

So, if a Conservative Christian tops your Presidential “must haves” there are certainly better choices (Cruz, Rubio, Huckabee). Several of the Republican hopefuls have strong Christian testimonies. Donald Trump? Not so much. Sure, America’s not electing a Pastor, but even the forefathers understood Christian principles were the driving force behind America’s greatness. Trump claims he wants to “Make America Great Again.” No one faults him for this motto as the last seven years have devastated our Country. However, for America to become great again, we need a leader that walks humbly before his/her God. Based upon his past and his prideful ramblings from lecterns across the United States, Donald Trump may not be the candidate qualified to meet this criteria.
